Welcome back to Trivia Tuesday, Clear Admit’s weekly peek into a U.S. law school program. Today we’re considering NYU School of Law’s LL.M. in Taxation, which is administered through the Graduate Tax Program. Tax LL.M.s from law schools with strong graduate programs like NYU’s are an expensive but effective way for law school graduates to build their skill sets during the downturn in hiring for law jobs.

Established in 1945, the Graduate Tax Program (GTP) at NYU is the oldest and most highly regarded program of its kind in the United States. Over 40 NYU faculty members, many of whom are important academic figures and practitioners in the field of taxation, lead the program and teach the courses. The GTP has approximately 115 students in the full-time program and 180-200 students in the part-time evening program.

Students in the GTP construct their program from the fifty courses offered by NYU in the area of tax law. Both full-time and part-time students are required to take a tax procedure course, and full-time students must take a tax policy course. LL.M. students may waive these requirements if they have previously taken either of these courses in their J.D. or equivalent studies.

Apart from these requirements, students design their own curricula within the field of taxation, and may opt to focus on general taxation, business taxation, international taxation, estate planning or tax policy. GTP students do not have an independent writing requirement, although they may gain up to two credits through working on a Directed Research project supervised by a faculty member.

For more information on NYU’s LL.M. in Tax or the other LL.M. programs offered NYU, be sure to check out the Clear Admit Law School Guide to NYU School of Law!

Today in Trivia Tuesday, we are taking a look at a unique exchange program maintained by New York City’s leading law schools: NYU School of Law and Columbia Law School.

Upper-level students at both law schools have the option of taking one course at the other school through the Columbia Law School/NYU School of Law Exchange. An agreement between the two New York City schools permits 30 students from each institution to enroll in a single course at the other school during one semester of 2L or 3L. Past courses offered by NYU to Columbia students as part of the exchange include European Consumer Law, Affirmative Action Today, Groups, Diversity and the Law, and Taxation in the New Millenium II. Columbia offers a similar variety of courses to NYU students.

Close to the start of term, students interested in taking a course at the other school choose from a list of roughly 25 courses that still have space available and submit a request form online. Third year J.D. students and LL.M. candidates are placed first, and the rest of the available spaces are filled with 2Ls. The exchange program is designed to broaden the legal education that students at each institution receive by exposing them to the academic offerings and culture of another leading law school. Students participating in the exchange are considered to be visiting students, and are given an email address and limited access to campus facilities at the other school.

For more information on exchange programs and other off-campus study offerings at NYU and CLS, be sure to read the Clear Admit Law School Guides for NYU School of Law and Columbia!

This month, the University of Chile School of Law hosted a conference entitled “How to Improve Regulation: Regulatory reform and economic activity.” Attended by Meera de Mel, assistant dean of global programs at NYU Law, and Michael Livermore, NYU Law Institute for Policy Integrity executive director, the meeting served as an opportunity for NYU and Chile to officially set details for both schools to join together in an academic collaboration.

The partnership is set to begin with work focused on establishing the city of Santiago as a meeting point for uniting academics and professionals examining climate finance. This issues has been examined by the NYU Global Climate Finance project which has aimed to bring together scholars to discuss global climate finance in a legal framework.

Both Livermore and Chile School of Law Dean Richard Revesz have worked in the past to study how cost-benefit analysis is utilized in an international framework. At a meeting sponsored by the NYU Global Climate Finance project in October 2010, the two gathered with top experts to discuss “global cost-benefit analysis.” The workshop lead to the formation of many different global case studies that will be published in a book set to release in fall 2012.

With Santiago growing as an entrepreneurial hub, both institutions are sure to benefit from this joint collaboration.

In this week’s edition of Trivia Tuesday, our ongoing glimpse into a leading J.D. program, we’re taking a look at NYU School of Law’s Hauser Global Law School Program (HGLSP). Created in 1994, HGLSP has become the School of Law’s international legal scholarship center and has made the study of transnational legal systems and their interactions with U.S. law a major focus of NYU’s law programs.

Like many other law schools, NYU seeks to be at the cutting edge of international legal scholarship. However, NYU has taken a more aggressive tactic than many of its peers, which have thus far taken subtler steps, such as adding a small number of international scholars to their permanent and temporary faculties and broadening their selection of courses on international legal systems. The HGLSP’s scope and ambition has led its leaders to pursue the goal of fully integrating the study of foreign legal systems into all aspects of the law school curriculum, so that every NYU student develops an understanding of the interplay between legal systems in a fully globalized environment. In its effort to incorporate international and comparative study into the core curriculum, NYU seeks to meet a growing need for a robust study of these areas that stems from current developments in the legal profession. For example, lawsuits that require familiarity with several different countries’ legal systems, such as those involving Internet domain names and humanitarian aid, are becoming more common, and NYU recognizes that law schools are obligated to prepare students to take up these matters through academic scholarship and legal practice.

Through the HGLSP, dozens of scholars hailing from nearly every continent come to NYU for semester for year-long teaching and research positions. At the School of Law, they become participating members of the NYU community through the courses they teach and the colloquia and lectures that they give throughout the year. Each year, HGLSP brings 10 established scholars to NYU to serve as Global Fellows and welcomes several other Global Fellows from Practice & Government – judges and practicing lawyers who occupy various positions in international governments – to teach many new courses and co-teach others with members of NYU’s permanent faculty. The program is also responsible for hosting 10-14 graduate students from countries outside the U.S., who come to NYU to produce an academic paper as Hauser Global Scholars.

Other global initiatives sponsored by the HGLSP include study abroad exchange programs, in which J.D. students have the opportunity to spend a semester at law schools worldwide, and the International Court of Justice Clerkship Program, for which a handful of talented graduating 3Ls and recent NYU School of Law alumni are chosen each year to clerk at The Hague for nine months.

For more information on global law programs at NYU and other leading law schools, be sure to consult the Special Programs sections of Clear Admit Law School Guides!

For the applicants who have recently opened a calendar to plot out the next few months only to realize they can’t possibly fit in campus visits on top of jobs, school and personal statements, never fear! It’s true that traveling to a school’s campus is an ideal way to learn about their program, but visiting is often not a viable option for applicants who live far away from their target schools or are unsure of their level of interest in a given school but want to submit a strong and informed application all the same. The good news is that law schools might very well come to them. Many law schools hit the road and embark on worldwide tours to dispense information and recruit qualified applicants at law school fairs and visits to individual colleges and universities. Such events offer a great opportunity for interested students to meet with admissions staff (and sometimes with current students and/or alumni), learn about the program and ask questions.

Most of the top schools are already on the road and ready to wrap up in mid-November, so we recommend looking into the travel schedules for programs of interest and planning accordingly. Keeping in mind that these schedules are updated and amended throughout the fall, here are some of the top programs’ itineraries for the weeks ahead:

Berkeley / Boalt:

The GTP has approximately 115 students in the full-time program and 200 students in the part-time evening program.
