Recently, we reported on how the ABA is implementing new criteria for reporting law school graduate information. In this week’s news, University of Chicago Law School has decided to release additional information before the new requirements go into effect next year.

The law school has released information offering a comprehensive view of employment statistics. For example, figures include how many graduates are working at variously sized firms and how many graduates are working in positions that require having passed the bar exam. Furthermore, both average salary and geographic location is made available by class. This data is available for the graduating classes of 2008, 2009 and 2010. The University of Chicago Law School based their method of reporting on the one used by Yale Law School.

In an interview with the blog Above the Law, Dean of University of Chicago Law School Michael Schill stated that he hopes the school’s actions “will encourage other law schools to report their statistics with the same level of granularity and with equal candor.” According to Above the Law, both Yale Law School and University of Chicago Law School serve as examples that a high level of reporting is possible.

For the full press release, go here.

During the recent American Association for Justice (AAJ) Mock Trial Northwest Regional competition, two teams representing Berkeley Law School found themselves in the final round. In the end, Stephanie Clark ’11, Jerome Price ’11, Julia Mehlman ’12 and Jonah Lalas ’12 came away with first prize. The second-place team was comprised of students Kevin Budner ’12, Aubrie Dillon ’11, Kristen Corpion ’13, and Tatiana Cottam ’11.

The coaches of the two teams are all employed at Walkup Melodia Kelly & Schoenberger, located in San Francisco. Spencer Pahlke, a Berkeley graduate himself, coached the winning team, while Melinda Derish ’03 and Emily Wecht coached the runners-up.

According to coach Pahlke, the competition went as well as it possibly could have. As he explained, “Our students’ preparation shined through brilliantly. They were informative and interesting in their opening statements, helped their witnesses be storytellers on direct examination, broke down the other side’s case on cross examination, and brought everything together during closing argument. It was a joy to watch.”

To reach the final round, each team has to win three preliminary-round trials, as well as a semi-final competition, before being judged by the presidents of Washington’s State Bar in the championship. This year, students participating in the competition focused on a collision between a semi-truck and a small passenger car, requiring “a lot of algebra and really understanding the math,” according to Lalas.

The competition – this year held in Seattle – attracted 16 teams. The winning team will advance to the national trials, this year held in Las Vegas on March 31-April 3. To read more about the Berkeley teams, click here.

New York University’s Law School hosted the two former Senate party leaders, Tom Daschle and Trent Lott, for a discussion on Congress and its changing climate over the years. Both senators first served in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in the late 1980s. Senator Tom Daschle served as the Democratic Senate Leader from 1994 to 2004 when he was defeated by Republican Senator John Thune. Senator Tom Lott, one of the first Republican Senators from the South in nearly a century, served as the Senate Republican Leader from 1996-2002. He retired from the Senate in 2007.

Their talk focused on the changes in Congress they had witness in over two decades of service. Both believed that Senate members had lost a sense of camaraderie as political and ideological divides sharpened. Remarked Daschle, “Our country is so deeply divided, philosophically and politically, right now. The Congress reflects that divide.” Lott noted, however, that dysfunction of the Senate had always existed, stating, “The Senate was designed to be dysfunctional. It was designed to force consensus.”

The talk was organized by the John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress. To view the conversation in full, please click here.

The Clear Admit Guide to Georgetown University Law Center contains the most up-to-date information available about the admissions process, academic programs and quality of life at Georgetown University Law Center, and we present it to you in an easy-to-read format. Download your copy to learn about Georgetown Law’s unique Curriculum B, its London-based Center for Transnational Legal Studies, its robust Public Interest Law Scholars Program and much, much more. Here’s a glimpse of our section on the Georgetown Law clinical program:

“The clinical program at Georgetown Law consists of 14 clinics, all of which offer free or low-cost legal services to underserved communities. In addition to these fourteen Georgetown-run programs, students can also participate in the independent clinic D.C. Law Students in Court, which is open to students from five law schools in the D.C. area. In all of these clinics, students are responsible for most aspects of client representation, including research, interviewing clients, counseling, negotiation, analysis, legal writing and elements of the oral advocacy process. Depending on the clinic in which they choose to enroll, students can gain experience in trial, administrative, appellate or legislative practice under the direct supervision of Georgetown Law faculty, as well as learn about corporate and transactional law and engage in policy analysis. In a few Georgetown clinics, students are permitted to personally represent their clients in court.

Georgetown’s newest clinic is the Community Justice Project, which opened in the spring of 2010. Students in this clinic take on a wide variety of cases based on the needs of the marginalized clients who approach them; thus far, the clinic has offered legal assistance to clients with HIV, represented runaway youths and people facing life sentences in prison, and helped incarcerated parents to reestablish contact with their children. Students’ responsibilities include investigating cases brought before the clinic, trial preparation, community organizing, written and oral advocacy, and lobbying governmental agencies on behalf of their clients.”

In today’s economic environment, law school graduates are finding it increasingly difficult to find jobs post-J.D. Even students who graduated from top-20 schools with impressive academic records are finding the job search to be a challenge; graduates from second and third-tier programs are finding the endeavor nearly impossible, often being forced to accept temporary positions or roles in smaller firms – a far cry from the careers the graduates assumed they would be free to pursue after completing three years of law school.

In a recent article, law professor Brian Tamanaha called his peer – fellow law professors – to action, expressing his opinion that professors are playing a role in the troubles law graduates are facing. According to his article, law applicants are drawn to law schools by visions of high paying firm jobs in the future – why else, he argues, would these individuals agree to give up their salaries for three years and graduate with loans that often exceed $100k. Oftentimes, the debt law graduates face post-J.D. requires that they pay up to $1,000 a month in loan repayments.

Tamanaha argues that it’s unfair to encourage a large number of applicants to apply to law schools when, in reality, many of them will struggle to find employment once they have received their degrees, and will therefore find it difficult to deal with the amount of debt they are carrying as a result of having attended law school. Especially at lower-tier programs, Tamanaha indicates, the majority of graduates will not be scoring high-paying big firm jobs, though most of the graduates will have been lured to law schools under the false perception that, so long as they work hard, they will have no trouble landing such a career.

Though Tamanaha agrees that that admissions offices could be doing more to curtail the number of law students graduating without employment prospects – such as accepting fewer students, being more upfront about the types of jobs students land after graduation and pushing for lower tuition fees – he also points out that professors are not entirely without blame in the situation. As Tamanaha boldly states, it is no longer acceptable for professors to sit idly by while law schools continue to mislead prospective about the opportunities they will have post-J.D. As he says, “The longer law schools delay in undertaking these measures, the more casualties there will be.” Professors, he indicates, can no longer pretend that their efforts – paid for by the students – will be enough to help graduates score lucrative jobs.
